Santa Monica Flute Competition 2024

Competition date:  February 24, 2024

Round 1 Video Submission deadline:  February 1, 2024 by 11:59 PM

The Santa Monica Conservatory of Music invites talented young local flutists to audition for an award, a cash prize, and comments by the University of Southern California Professor and Los Angeles Philharmonic Associate Principal Flutist Catherine Ransom Karoly. 

Auditions are open to all flute students studying in the Los Angeles area.

Round 1 MUST be uploaded to YouTube and must not have any audio edits. Instructions for YouTube upload and format instructions can be found HERE

Awards are given in the following categories:

Junior Division - Grade level 4-7: first place winner(s) will receive $100.

Senior Division - Grade level 8-12: first place winner(s) will receive $200.

Senior Division (Grades 8-12)

First Round

Final Round 

Live at Santa Monica Conservatory of  Music

  • Solo flute work of choice not exceeding ten minutes. 

  • Contrasting work with piano of choice not exceeding 15 minutes. 

Piano accompaniment will be provided, but competitors are welcome to bring their own accompaniment. 

Finalists will be communicated by February 10th. They will be asked to play their final round repertoire as listed. Jurists include Catherine Karoly (Associate Principal Flute of the LA Phil), and Sierra Schmeltzer (SMCM Flute Instructor). Awards and comments will follow immediately after. Winners selected from the competition will be asked to play one selection at the winners' concert at 5 pm.

Glendale-located flute shop Flutacious will be in-house to display flutes and flute accessories for sale. Immediately following the concert, Flutacious will present a flute repair class where students can get first-hand experience taking part in a flute and learning how to make minor repairs on their own instrument! 

*The judge's decision will be final, including the decision not to give an award in any or all of the categories.*
